Where exactly is Swindon?

Swindon is located in the north-east tip of the County of Wiltshire, central southern England, 75 miles west of London and about 40 miles from Bristol.

The town grew up because of its convenient position along the Great Western Railway line from London to Bristol, which carries onwards to South Wales and South West England. It sits along the M4, far enough from London to maintain its own identity, but close enough to benefit from economic development and links to important institutions.

Where is that, again?

Swindon’s geographical location confounds many people, as it is equally associated with the Thames Valley as it is with South West England. At the same time Swindon it is easily accessible from the Midlands and Birmingham as well as from the south coast and Southampton. This gives the Borough a great advantage as a strategically placed business location that is reflected by the diverse population drawn from all over the UK and the wider world.

It is well served by the motorway and rail transport networks and is approximately one hour’s drive to both London Heathrow and Bristol airports.

A perfect location

The Borough of Swindon stretches to the banks of the emergent River Thames in the north, and to the Wessex Downs in the south. The Cotswolds are on the doorstep, the Chilterns, the Vale of the White Horse and the dreaming spires of Oxford are a little way further to the north and east. Wales and the glorious rural south west counties of Dorset, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall are also within easy reach.
